Getting to Shillong
Shillong, the capital of the Indian state of Meghalaya, can be reached by various means of transportation. Here are the different ways to reach Shillong:
1. By Air: The nearest airport to Shillong is the Shillong Airport, also known as Umroi Airport. However, it has limited connectivity and mainly operates flights to and from Kolkata, Dimapur and Imphal. Another option is to fly to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, which is around 120 kilometers away from Shillong, and then travel by road.
2. By Road: Shillong is well-connected by road to major cities in Northeast India. You can either hire a taxi or use state-run and private buses to travel to Shillong from nearby cities like Guwahati, Silchar, Itanagar, Aizawl and other towns in Meghalaya.
3. By Rail: There is no direct railway connectivity to Shillong. The nearest major railway station is Guwahati Railway Station, which is well-connected to major cities across India. From Guwahati, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Shillong.
4. By Bus: State-run and private buses ply regularly between Shillong and nearby cities like Guwahati, Silchar, and other towns in Meghalaya. The road network is generally good, offering a scenic journey through the picturesque landscapes of Meghalaya.
5. By Shared Taxis: Shared taxis are a common mode of transportation in the Northeast region. You can find shared taxis from Guwahati and other nearby towns to Shillong. These taxis usually operate on a fixed route and depart when they have enough passengers.
Overall, while Shillong might not have direct air or rail connectivity, it is well-connected by road, making it accessible to travelers from various parts of India.
